The End of an Era: BT to Stop Manufacturing Home Phones

The End of an Era: BT to Stop Manufacturing Home Phones

You may be aware that BT have been phasing out the old copper phone network, replacing it with digital-based technology. This transition was originally set to be completed by the end of 2025, but has since been pushed back to early 2027, with an awareness campaign recently launched aimed at those who aren’t yet prepared.

What you may not know, however, is that they are planning another big change too.

As of this year, BT will no longer be producing home phone handsets.

At first glance, this might sound alarming. After all, BT are the most well-known landline phone brand on the market. Don't panic, though, we have a wide selection of high quality home phones to let you use your landline for many years to come.

What does this mean for you?

The good news is that BT’s decision doesn’t mean home phones are disappearing altogether. liGo have been supplying the best cordless phones on the market for over 20 years and our top brands, Gigaset andPanasonic, remain committed to the UK market In addition newer entrants such as VTech and Motorola are also providing an extensive range of options. liGo has consistently rated both Gigaset and Panasonic for their build and sound quality above BT products in our top 10 buying guides over the years.

The most popular BT model by far has been the BT 4600, which is geared towards older users and those who may be hard of hearing. If this applies to you, then there are still handsets available. The Panasonic KX-TGM420 is an excellent choice, and also includes a few additional features that the BT 4600 lacks, such as a flashing call alert. There’s also the Gigaset E390A, which also has an extra-loud volume mode and large, backlit buttons.

Making the switch

If you're thinking of updating your home phone system, then now is a great time to do so. As there won't be any more BT handsets manufactured, you will likely have difficulty getting a replacement if yours fails under warranty, so could end up needing to make the switch at some point in the future anyway.

Contrary to some of the information out there, if BT are your landline provider, you don't need a BT handset to use your landline; any will work, provided that they can be plugged in to your router. Every cordless phone we stock on our site is compatible with the new digital landline system, so when you shop with liGo, you can rest easy!
