The Panasonic KX-PRW120 is a premium designer cordless phone with in-built answering machine. It delivers top of the range features to your home including Panasonics innovative Smartphone Connect, and Call Blocking. It comes with a premium price tag of £108.99 for the single (the twin set is £187.99) but with a ringing endorsement from Which? as one of their Best Buys in addition to approval from Good Housekeeping, we were keen to put it to the test and find out if it lives up to the hype.

Design and Build

Perhaps the most striking thing about the PRW120 is its unique design. Panasonic has delivered a cordless phone that breaks with convention in terms of style; a high-quality speaker protrudes from the top of the handset propping it up when laid flat making it easier to grab. The contacts for charging the handset are found on the underside of the speaker, and it sits securely on the sleek base thanks to a magnetic adaptor. Further notable features of the design include the large user friendly colour display, and the precision keypad that lies flush against the handset.

The build quality of the Panasonic KX-PRW120 is excellent; the handset looks and feels like you’d expect a top-range designer phone to, with a nice weight to it thanks to its elegant metal finish.

Sound Quality

The sound quality using the handset is very good with callers coming through exceptionally clear. I think I was expecting more from the hands-free loudspeaker due to the sheer size of it, but was left a little underwhelmed. It’s good, but not any better than any decent loudspeaker on a standard cordless phone. The audio quality of recorded messages on the answering machine was not quite as clear but far from inaudible.

Ease of use & set-up

In spite of its advanced feature list, I found the PRW120 is a very easy home phone to set up and use. The large colour screen aids navigation through the menus, which feature icons and text that are well laid out. I would say that whilst I didn’t have any problems with the flat lying buttons, I can imagine that they may pose a problem for some as there is little space between them.

Instructions that come with the phone are comprehensive and fairly straightforward; ideal to be used for reference.

Range & Battery Life

The range of the PRW120 was good providing solid coverage indoors and out; you’re not likely to find a DECT phone that offers any further. It is repeater compatible so if you do need to extend the range then this is possible. You can find a list of compatible repeaters here.

The handset uses 2x AAA rechargeable batteries, which provides a fair amount of use between charges. In our tests the handsets lasted just shy of 10 hours continuous use, and a week on standby before it needed recharging.

Smartphone Connect

One of the most practical features of the Panasonic KX-PRW 120 is its "Smartphone Connect", which uses your home Wi-Fi network to connect up to 3 Smartphones. In order for this feature to work you need to download Panasonic's free app (available for Android and iOS), and be connected to Wi-Fi. I tested on iOS and whilst it won't win any design awards for its user-interface, it is functional, easy to use, and most importantly works.

Smartphone Connect

Once your Smartphone is paired you can make and receive calls to your landline with your Smartphone - not exactly groundbreaking but certainly useful. In addition, you can also: copy contacts from your Smartphone to your PRW120, transfer landline calls between Smartphone and PRW120, and use images stored on your Smartphone as screensaver on your Panasonic handset.

Additional Features

The Panasonic KX-PRW120 is packed with features to take advantage of. In addition to Smartphone connect you can also use it to block nuisance calls; up to 100 specific numbers and/or any callers without Caller ID.

The in-built digital answering machine offers a recording time of up to 40 minutes of messages, and can be access remotely from an external line (and also any Smartphones that are connected). Further notable features include: Talking Caller ID, Call Restrict (which can PIN-protect outgoing calls to premium rate numbers), a time controlled call silencing function ("Do Not Disturb") so you can switch off the ringer during the night or inconvenient periods of the day, and also the facility to double up as a baby monitor. A full list of the features is available here.

This is an excellent premium DECT phone from Panasonic that delivers on style, features, and sound quality. It is on the expensive side but the build quality, specifications and overall aesthetic of the PRW120 definitely lives up to the premium price and the hype.
