What to look for in a toaster

Hopefully, the above options have helped you narrow down your choice of toaster. However, there are a few things that you'll want to bear in mind when selecting your next purchase, whichever one you end up going with:

Size

Probably the key feature to consider when choosing a toaster is size. For the most part, they come in either two- or four-slot models, although there are some six-slot models available as well. The advantage of a two-slot toaster is that they tend to take up much less space on your kitchen countertop. So, if space is at a premium, these may be a better fit for you. On the other hand, a four-slot toaster is generally the better choice for families, as they allow you to make more slices at once and save you having to form a queue at breakfast time if everyone likes two slices to themselves (as we do!).

Browning control

These days, all but the most basic models of toasters tend to come with some form of adjustable browning control. As the name suggests, this allows you to select just how well-done your toast will be when it pops out. Unfortunately there's no universal meaning to these numbers. Many people assume they refer to a set period of time, but we've found that every manufacturer has a different idea of what, for instance, toast done to a "3" will look like. We'd recommend looking at models with a good number of options here, and then carrying out a few test toasts when you first use it to find out which one toasts to your liking.
